Product structured data is code that describes a product in a form search engines can read: name, image, price, currency and whether it is in stock. Without a valid offer, Google has less to show about your product in search and shopping results.
Why it matters
Search results with price and stock information earn more qualified clicks, because the shopper already knows the basics. Product data also feeds free shopping listings.
Many themes ship structured data that is almost complete. A missing price or availability field is enough to make it unusable, and it never shows up on the page itself.
What the audit looks at
The audit checks that the product page describes the product, with a price, currency and availability, in a form search engines can read.
What usually causes it
- A theme that outputs Product data without an offer
- Two apps or plugins each adding their own Product data, producing duplicates
- A price that is formatted with symbols or text so it is not a valid number
- Availability not updated when a product sells out
How to fix it
Add Product structured data with price and availability. The effort is medium, a theme or template edit that takes an afternoon.
- Product schema is what lets Google show price, stock and rating in the search result instead of a plain link.
- Required: name, image, and offers carrying price, currency and availability. Add sku, brand and description -- Google recommends them and they widen eligibility.
- Validate with the Rich Results Test, then watch Search Console for the enhancement report.
On Shopify
- Most modern themes emit it already; if yours does not, add a JSON-LD block to the product template rather than installing an app for it.
On WooCommerce
- WooCommerce emits Product schema by default. If it is missing, a theme or SEO plugin is stripping or overriding it -- check for duplicate schema output first.
- WooCommerce does not emit brand, so expect that one to be flagged even on a healthy store; add it in your SEO plugin rather than hunting a conflict that is not there.
How to check it yourself
- Paste a product URL into Google's Rich Results Test and read the Product result.
- Look for warnings about missing price, priceCurrency or availability.
- Compare the structured data with what the page shows for a sale item and a sold-out item.
Frequently asked questions
Does structured data improve rankings?
It does not directly raise rankings. It makes pages eligible for richer displays and helps search engines understand the product, which can lift clicks.
Which format should I use?
Google recommends JSON-LD. Most modern themes and SEO plugins output it.
