How it works

How the Store Health Score works

A score is only useful if you know what it covers. This page explains what the audit reads, the five areas it scores and what the grades mean.

In short

The audit loads your pages in a real browser and runs 200+ checks. The results become a score for each of five areas, and the areas combine into one number from 0 to 100, graded A to F. Every finding shows the evidence behind it.

What the audit reads

The audit opens your home page and a product page in a real browser, at desktop and phone sizes, and records what loads and what a shopper sees. Where the store allows it, it also looks at the cart and checkout. It reads only what a visitor can see. It needs no login and no installed app, and it never fills in a form or places an order.

Speed figures come from Google PageSpeed Insights, which combines a lab test with real-visitor data where Google has enough of it.

Five areas

Each area is scored on its own, so you can see which part of the store is pulling the number down.

How a check is judged

Every check ends as a pass, a partial pass or a fail. A check that does not apply to your store, or that cannot be answered from what the audit saw, is left out of the score and not guessed.

Checks carry a severity, from critical down to low. A serious problem counts for more than a small one, and a serious failure holds its area's score down however many small checks pass.

Grades

The final score maps to a grade.

Comparing scores

Every store is held to the same set of checks, so scores are comparable between sites. We improve the audit over time, so a score can move after an improvement even when your store has not changed. Each report shows the date it was made, and the benchmarks page shows how scores are spread across the stores we have scanned.

What the audit cannot see

It reads public pages. It does not see your analytics, orders, ad accounts or anything behind a login. Findings are a prioritised starting point, not a guarantee of any result.

FAQs

About the score

001How is the Store Health Score calculated?

Each check ends as a pass, a partial pass or a fail, or is left out when it does not apply. The results are combined into a score for each of five areas, and the five area scores are combined into one number from 0 to 100, graded A to F.

002Why did my score change without me changing anything?

Either your store changed, such as a new app or a theme update, or we improved the audit. Every report shows the date it was made, so compare reports from the same period when you can.

003Does a failure count more than a pass?

Serious problems count for more than small ones, and a serious failure holds an area's score down however many small checks pass.

004What can the audit not see?

Anything behind a login, your analytics and orders, and behavior that needs a real payment method. It reads what a visitor can see.

005Can I see how a single finding was reached?

Yes. Every finding names the page, element or measured value it came from, so you can check it on your own store.
