A search box that only says "Search" gives no clue about what works. A hint such as Search for jackets, boots or gift cards shows the shopper what to type. This check looks at the placeholder or hint text.

Why it matters

Shoppers who are unsure what to type often do not search. A hint tells them the box understands products and categories. The cost is one line of text.

What the audit looks at

The audit reads the placeholder and label of the search field and checks that it carries more than the single word Search.

What usually causes it

  • Theme defaults that say only Search
  • An icon-only search with no hint
  • A placeholder hidden on mobile
  • A search app that overrides the text

How to fix it

Give the search box a hint, not just the word "Search". The effort is small, usually a setting or a paste and under 30 minutes.

  1. A placeholder such as "Search for trainers, jackets or gifts" tells shoppers what is searchable and what to type.
  2. Keep it short enough to show in full on a phone.

On Shopify

  1. Online Store > Themes, open the menu on your theme and choose Edit default theme content, then search for the search placeholder text and change it.

On WooCommerce

  1. Change the placeholder in the search form template of your theme, or in the search widget or block settings.

How to check it yourself

  1. Focus the search field and read the hint.
  2. Try the example query it suggests and see whether it returns results.
  3. Check it on mobile.

Frequently asked questions

Should the hint rotate?

A fixed hint is simpler and works. A rotating one can show variety but may distract.

Does this help SEO?

No. It helps shoppers use the search.
