Not enough data

Subheadings break a product page into sections a shopper can scan: description, materials, sizing, shipping, reviews. They also tell search engines what each part is about. This check looks for a sensible heading structure below the main title on the product page.

Why it matters

Most people skim. A wall of unbroken text hides the one detail a shopper needs, such as fabric or battery life. Headings let them jump to it. Using them as formatting for bold text, rather than as structure, defeats the purpose.

What the audit looks at

The audit reads the heading elements on the product page and checks for subheadings in the content beneath the top-level title.

What usually causes it

  • Descriptions pasted as plain paragraphs from a supplier
  • Sections styled with bold text instead of heading tags
  • A theme that uses headings only for the title
  • Accordion tabs that hide headings from view

How to fix it

Break the product description into sections with clear subheadings. The effort is small, usually a setting or a paste and under 30 minutes.

  1. Add h2 headings such as "What is in the box", "How it works" and "Care", and keep one h1 for the product name.

On Shopify

  1. Edit the product description in the admin and use the Heading format for section titles, or add collapsible-tab blocks in Online Store > Themes > Customize > Product page.

On WooCommerce

  1. Use Heading 2 blocks in the long description, or tabs in your theme's product template.

How to check it yourself

  1. Use a heading outline extension or view the source and list the H1 to H3 elements.
  2. Read the outline alone and see whether it describes the page.
  3. Check that important sections such as shipping and sizing have their own heading.

Frequently asked questions

How many headings should a product page have?

As many as the content needs. A short product may have two or three, a technical one more.

Do headings need keywords?

They should describe the section clearly. Natural wording works better than stuffing.
