Stores failing

1%

Of 81 stores we scanned where this check applies, 1% fail it and 65% pass. See all benchmarks.

Photos are the nearest thing a shopper has to holding the product. Large, sharp, consistent images signal a careful seller, and blurry or tiny ones signal the opposite. This check looks for enough imagery to judge the product.

Why it matters

Online buyers cannot inspect, so they infer quality from presentation. Poor photos make people doubt the product itself. Consistent lighting and backgrounds across the catalogue also make a small store look established.

What the audit looks at

The audit examines the number and dimensions of the product images and whether the main image is large enough to show detail.

What usually causes it

  • Supplier images at low resolution
  • Photos in inconsistent lighting and backgrounds
  • Main image cropped so the product is small in the frame
  • Compression so heavy that detail is lost

How to fix it

Show the product properly: multiple angles, in use, and at scale. The effort is medium, a theme or template edit that takes an afternoon.

  1. Include at least one in-context shot showing the product in use or worn -- this is the single most common gap on small stores.
  2. Show scale. A product photographed alone on white tells the visitor nothing about how big it is.
  3. Enable zoom, and make images sharp at the zoomed size rather than upscaled.

How to check it yourself

  1. View the main product image at full size and judge its sharpness.
  2. Compare images across several products for consistency.
  3. Test the gallery on a high-resolution phone screen.

Frequently asked questions

What resolution do I need?

Many platforms recommend images at least 2000 pixels on the long side so zoom is crisp.

Can I use supplier images?

You can, but others use them too. Original photography sets the store apart.
