Not enough data
Search engines read image file names as a clue to what a photo shows. A file called linen-shirt-navy-front.jpg says something. IMG_4821.jpg says nothing. This check looks at the file names of your product images.
Why it matters
Image search brings real traffic to product pages, and the file name is one of the few signals available for a picture. It costs nothing to name files well before upload and a lot of effort to fix hundreds of them afterwards.
What the audit looks at
The audit lists the product images on the product page and checks whether their file names are descriptive or generic camera or random strings.
What usually causes it
- Photos uploaded straight from a camera with default names
- Supplier images with codes and no description
- A bulk import that kept internal SKUs as file names
- Platform renaming that adds hash strings
How to fix it
Rename product images to describe the product before uploading them. The effort is small, usually a setting or a paste and under 30 minutes.
- Use lowercase words joined by hyphens, such as "blue-merino-sweater-front.jpg".
On Shopify
- Shopify keeps the uploaded file name, so rename the files and re-upload them on the product; the alt text is edited separately in the media window.
On WooCommerce
- Rename the files before upload, or use a media plugin that renames on upload; re-attach them to the product.
How to check it yourself
- Right-click a product photo, open it in a new tab and read the file name in the address.
- In your media library, sort by name and look for patterns of IMG_ or DSC_.
- Rename a few key products first and check how the platform treats the change.
Frequently asked questions
Should I rename existing images?
Prioritise best sellers. Renaming can change the image address, so check that your platform keeps old addresses working.
Is alt text the same thing?
No. Alt text is a separate description read by screen readers and search engines. Do both.
