Not enough data

If sold-out products appear in a category, they should be labelled as sold out on the card. A shopper who clicks through to find the item unavailable has wasted a step and may leave. This check looks for those labels.

Why it matters

Hiding sold-out items loses their search traffic and their back-in-stock signup potential. Showing them unlabelled frustrates people. A clear tag keeps the product visible and sets expectations.

What the audit looks at

The audit looks at category cards for sold-out products and checks whether a label or badge states it.

What usually causes it

  • A theme with no sold-out badge
  • Badges only on the product page
  • A label hidden in small text
  • Inventory not synced, so nothing shows as out of stock

How to fix it

Label sold-out products clearly in category pages. The effort is small, usually a setting or a paste and under 30 minutes.

  1. A product that looks available but cannot be bought wastes a click. Show a Sold out label, and let shoppers filter to in-stock items.
  2. Offer a back-in-stock notification where you can.

On Shopify

  1. Products > Inventory: make sure inventory is tracked for the product. Themes then show a Sold out badge when stock reaches zero; check the badge setting in the collection template.

On WooCommerce

  1. Turn on stock management on each product (Inventory tab), so the Out of stock label appears on the card.

How to check it yourself

  1. Find a sold-out product in a category and read its card.
  2. Check that the label is visible on mobile.
  3. Click through to confirm the product page agrees.

Frequently asked questions

Should sold-out items be hidden?

It depends. Temporarily out items are better kept with a notify option. Discontinued ones can be removed or redirected.

Where should the label go?

Over the image corner or beside the price, in a contrasting colour.
