Not enough data

Showing the number of products in a category, such as 48 products, gives shoppers a sense of scale. They know whether to scroll, filter or search. This check looks for a product count on category pages.

Why it matters

A count is a quiet orientation cue. It tells a shopper when a filter has narrowed the list, and when there is little to see. It is a small detail that costs a line of text.

What the audit looks at

The audit reads the category page for a visible product count.

What usually causes it

  • A theme that omits the count
  • A count that appears only after filtering
  • A count hidden on mobile
  • Counts that do not update with filters

How to fix it

Show how many products the category lists, next to the title or the filters. The effort is small, usually a setting or a paste and under 30 minutes.

  1. Show a count such as "48 products" near the category heading and update it when filters change.

On Shopify

  1. Most Shopify themes have a "Show product count" option in the collection template settings: Online Store > Themes > Customize > Collection pages.

On WooCommerce

  1. WooCommerce shows "Showing 1-12 of 48 results" by default; if it is gone, your theme removed woocommerce_result_count, so add it back in the child theme.

How to check it yourself

  1. Open a category and look near the title and sort control.
  2. Apply a filter and see whether the count changes.
  3. Check mobile.
