Not enough data

On a category page, shoppers often want to narrow by more than one attribute: size and colour and price. Filters that can be combined let them do it. This check looks for a category page whose filters can be applied together.

Why it matters

Large categories overwhelm. A shopper who can combine filters reaches a short, relevant list, and one who can use only one filter at a time is left to scan the rest. The more products you sell, the more this matters.

What the audit looks at

The audit loads a category page and looks for filter controls that allow more than one selection across attributes.

What usually causes it

  • Filtering by one attribute only, from a theme default
  • Filters that reset the previous choice when another is picked
  • Filters hidden behind a button that is easy to miss on mobile
  • No filters on a category with many products

How to fix it

Let shoppers combine filters on category pages. The effort is medium, a theme or template edit that takes an afternoon.

  1. Filters that replace each other (size, then colour wipes the size choice) force shoppers to start over.
  2. Combined filters, for example size 9 and black and under $150, should narrow the same list and show how many results remain.

On Shopify

  1. Install the Shopify Search & Discovery app (free), open it, choose Filters, and pick which filters to show. Online Store 2.0 themes then show them on collection pages, and shoppers can combine them.

On WooCommerce

  1. Use a filter plugin that supports several active filters at once and shows result counts, or the product filter blocks that come with your theme if it has them.

How to check it yourself

  1. Open a large category and apply two filters in turn.
  2. Check that the product count updates and the choices remain.
  3. Test on a phone.

Frequently asked questions

Which filters should I offer?

Those shoppers actually use. Size, colour, price and availability are common starting points.

Do filters hurt SEO?

Filter pages can create many near-duplicate URLs. Block or noindex low-value combinations.
