The order products first appear in decides what most shoppers see. Default to best sellers instead of an arbitrary or oldest-first list.

Not enough data
Most shoppers never change the sort order, so the default decides what they see. Listing best sellers first puts proven products where attention is highest. An arbitrary or oldest-first default shows whatever happened to be added first. This check reads the default order.
Why it matters
The first row of a category gets the most views and clicks. A default that puts slow sellers there wastes that space. Best-selling order is not the only choice, but it should be a deliberate one.
What the audit looks at
The audit reads which sort option is selected when the category page loads.
What usually causes it
- A platform default of manual order or alphabetical
- A catalogue never reordered after launch
- A default of newest first on a store with a small, stable range
- A collection with sorting set per collection and forgotten
How to fix it
Open category pages sorted by best sellers. The effort is small, usually a setting or a paste and under 30 minutes.
- An arbitrary order shows shoppers the least tested products first. Best sellers is the safest default.
- A manual order is fine if you curate it on purpose.
On Shopify
- Products > Collections > open a collection and set Sort to Best selling.
On WooCommerce
- Appearance > Customize > WooCommerce > Product catalog: set Default product sorting to Popularity (sales).
How to check it yourself
- Open a category and check which sort option is selected.
- Compare the first row with your best selling list in analytics.
- Check several collections, since each has its own setting.
Frequently asked questions
Is best selling always best?
It is a safe default. Seasonal stores may prefer newest or featured, as long as the choice is deliberate.
Can I curate the top row by hand?
Yes. Manual order works if someone maintains it.
