Third-party scripts are code loaded from domains other than your store: analytics, chat, reviews, ads, popups. Each is useful on its own. Together they can outweigh your own site and slow every tap. This check flags stores where their combined weight is more than a reasonable share.
Why it matters
Stores accumulate scripts the way drawers accumulate cables. An app is installed for a campaign, a trial ends, and the script keeps loading for years. Each script costs download time and then competes for the browser's attention when the shopper tries to tap.
The audit shows which hosts load and how heavy each is, so removing one is a decision with a known price.
What the audit looks at
The audit looks at how much of the page's weight comes from scripts and files loaded from other companies' servers.
What usually causes it
- Apps uninstalled in the admin that left snippets in theme code
- Several chat, popup and review tools doing overlapping jobs
- Marketing tags added through a tag manager and never reviewed
- Social embeds and video players loaded on pages where they are not used
How to fix it
Remove or defer third-party scripts you are not using. The effort is medium, a theme or template edit that takes an afternoon.
- List every third-party domain in the network tab and name the business reason for each. Anything unnamed comes out.
- Uninstalled apps commonly leave their script behind -- check theme code for orphaned tags.
- Load what remains asynchronously, and after interaction where it is not needed for the first paint.
On Shopify
- Online Store > Themes > Edit code, and search theme.liquid for script tags belonging to apps you have removed.
- Uninstalling an app does not always remove its snippet; the snippet keeps loading and failing.
How to check it yourself
- Open Chrome DevTools, go to Network, reload, and group by domain, or sort by the Domain column.
- List every domain that is not yours and write down what each one does.
- Remove one at a time on a theme copy and compare PageSpeed results.
Frequently asked questions
Are all third-party scripts bad?
No. Analytics and payments are needed. The point is to know what you load, remove what you do not use, and delay what is not needed for the first screen.
How do I find which app a script belongs to?
The audit names the owner when it recognises the file, such as a theme asset, a WordPress plugin or a known Shopify app. Otherwise the script URL host usually names the vendor.
