Google Analytics 4 (GA4) is the analytics property most stores use to see traffic, sources and sales. This check confirms that GA4 is installed on your store and actually sending data, because an install that exists on paper but sends nothing leaves you without numbers.
Why it matters
Every decision about ads, content and discounts depends on knowing where visitors come from and what they do. A store with no working analytics is guessing. The problem is often invisible: the tag was added to a staging theme, the property ID has a typo, or a consent banner blocks it for everyone.
Fixing it early matters because analytics data cannot be recovered for the days it was off.
What the audit looks at
The audit checks that Google Analytics 4 is installed and actually sending data, not only that its script is on the page.
What usually causes it
- The GA4 tag added to the wrong theme or only to some templates
- A measurement ID typed incorrectly or belonging to an old property
- A consent tool that blocks all analytics until a choice that many visitors never make
- A tag manager container that is published without the GA4 tag
How to fix it
Install GA4 so you can see where your traffic and revenue come from. The effort is small, usually a setting or a paste and under 30 minutes.
- Create a GA4 property at analytics.google.com and copy its measurement ID (G- followed by ten characters).
- Install the tag on every page, ideally through Google Tag Manager so later tags need no code change.
- Enable ecommerce events so purchases and revenue are attributed, not just pageviews.
- Check GA4 Realtime shows your own visit within a minute.
On Shopify
- Go to Settings > Customer events > Add custom pixel, or install the Google & YouTube channel, which wires GA4 and ecommerce events for you.
- Paste the measurement ID from your GA4 property.
- Confirm purchase events arrive by placing a test order and watching GA4 Realtime.
On WooCommerce
- Install the free official Google Analytics for WooCommerce plugin, or GTM4WP if you already run a tag manager, rather than pasting the tag into your theme.
- Enter the measurement ID and enable ecommerce event tracking.
- Place a test order and confirm the purchase event appears in GA4 Realtime.
How to check it yourself
- Open Google Analytics, go to Reports then Realtime and load your store in another tab. Your own visit should appear within a minute.
- Use Tag Assistant or the Chrome DevTools Network tab and search for "collect" to see the request go out.
- Check both the home page and a product page.
Frequently asked questions
Is Universal Analytics still collecting?
No. Google stopped processing standard Universal Analytics data on 1 July 2023, so a store still relying on it has no current data.
Do I need a developer to install GA4?
Usually not. Both Shopify and WooCommerce have built-in or plugin routes that take a measurement ID and add the tag for you.
