What is conversion rate optimization (CRO) for online stores?

Definition

Conversion rate optimization, or CRO, is the work of increasing the share of visitors who buy by removing friction and adding reasons to trust and decide. It starts from evidence about how people use the store, not from opinions about design.

What CRO work looks like

It runs in a loop: find where visitors drop off, form a hypothesis about why, change the page, and measure whether the change helped. Audits, analytics, session recordings, customer surveys and A/B tests are the usual tools.

Where an audit fits

An audit finds known problems quickly: a buy button below the first phone screen, a pixel that never fires, a checkout that forces an account. These fixes need no test because the cause is clear. Testing is for questions where nobody knows the answer.

What it does not do

CRO cannot rescue a store with the wrong product, price or traffic. It improves the use of the visitors you already have.

Frequently asked questions

Do small stores need CRO?

Yes, in a lighter form. Fix the obvious problems an audit finds before you consider testing.

Is A/B testing required?

No. It needs enough traffic to give a clear result, so small stores gain more from fixing known problems.
