What is add-to-cart rate, and what does a low one mean?

Definition

Add-to-cart rate is the percentage of product page sessions in which a shopper adds an item to the cart. It sits between viewing a product and buying one, so it shows whether the product page is persuading.

How to read it

A low rate with good traffic points at the product page: price, photos, information or the buy button. A healthy add-to-cart rate with weak sales points further down, at the cart and checkout.

What lifts it

A buy button visible on the first phone screen, clear price and shipping, enough photos, reviews and an easy way to ask a question.
